Conflict 1
The first conflict is When Horace and Will get in a fight. Their fight breaks out at a picnic gathering with Will and all of his friends from the ward. Jenny has made her famous pies for everyone and Horace shows up late and thinks no pies have been left for him. He is also already very upset because he has been bullied at battle school for a few weeks already. Horace starts yelling at everyone and getting rough. Will steps in and starts fighting Horace. This fight is not resolved immediately as it is cut short and broken up by Sir Rodney. After a few weeks Horace and Will are still mad at each other and they wind up going on a boar hunt together. The boar hunt gets out of control when a second boar charges out and Horace tries to defend Will but slips. Will ends up saving Horace's life and the conflict is resolved when Horace says “‘ I owe you my life, Will’” (Flanagan 145).
Conflict 2
The second conflict is when Horace gets bullied by three students in battle school. Three bullies gang up on Horace right when he starts training. The bullying continues for weeks, but Horace does not tell any authorities because he thinks it is normal and does not want to seem weak. The bullying keeps getting worse until the bullies decide they want to beat up Will. Horace heads to Halts cabin where Will is to stop them. When he gets there a fight breaks out. It looks bad for Will and Horace as they are outnumbered and Horace is already injured. Will is also caught off guard and does not have his weapons. Halt sees the fight from inside and puts an end to it by beating up the bullies and scaring them. Halt then tells Sir Rodney about the bullies and the conflict is resolved when Sir Rodney expels them all from battle school.
Conflict 3
The Final conflict is when Halt and Will fight the Kalkara. The fight starts with Halt against two Kalkara. Halt is ambushed by two Kalkara at night. He is caught of guard as he thought that they were not even near him at the moment. Halt recovers quickly and manages to use precision shooting with his bow, to kill one Kalkara, but the second one wounds him very badly. Halt barely manages to escape and hide from the second Kalkara. In the last seconds before Halt is killed, Will shows up and draws the Kalkara away from Halt. Will then remembers that a Kalkara’s hide is flammable. So he starts one of his arrows on fire and shoots it at the Kalkara. The Kalkara bursts into flames and falls to the ground. This conflict is finally resolved when both Kalkara are lying on the ground, dead.
